Oconee Democratic Caucus yields new committee members, officers

The Oconee County Democratic Committee held its biannual caucus at Kumquat Mae Bakery and Cafe Saturday, August 11 with an enthusiastic gathering of dedicated individuals trying to advance and resuscitate the Democratic party in what may be the most Republican county in all of Georgia.

Carolyn Crawford replaced Liz Goodroe as Secretary of the Oconee County Democratic Committee, and several new members came on board to the committee to replace members who have decided to pursue other activities. Lisa Allen took over Dr. Tony Glenn's slot in the Farmington, Bishop, New High Shoals district, and we welcomed Wendy Wade as a committee member as well as Ms. Crawford.

Pat Adams replaced Rita Bennett as 1st Vice President while Dr. Robert Wyatt agreed to serve as 2nd Vice President. At least until Christmas I will continue to serve as Chair.

Other interested participants appeared at the hour long gathering to discuss attendance policy and other matters in the months leading up to the General Election in Georgia.  The Oconee County Democratic Committee meets the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm. We were not going to meet this month, but at least one media report and one event invitation went out, so at least I will show up this August 16 Thursday evening at 7 pm. I received the secretarial materials from Liz and greatly appreciate her volunteering for these many years.

Just for the record, Kumquat Mae is a nonpartisan restaurant that has also hosted Republican candidates including Pam Hendrix and Sarah Bell before the recent primary. I hope both of them get elected some day and strongly urge them to keep running and maybe even cross party lines to come talk to us again. It has been very eye opening to see the amount of people who have contributed to Democratic candidates and causes in Oconee County right at a 1,000 people in the last decade.
